Focus

March 31, 2017

A good friend of mine told me about the amazing idea of choosing one word to be your word for the year. My choice came to me instantly, focus. I have been a mum for 12 years and a teacher before motherhood and I have always loved working with kids and helping them discover their talents; sometimes they are hidden and sometimes they are overt. 2016 was a difficult year, and I felt like I received an electric shock which jolted me into action to return to education.

Students have access to powerful, dangerous tools—electronic devices. I feel like we have given them a car and put them on the highway with no licence or with very little driver’s education. The ramifications of social media and how students are presenting themselves to the world is a difficult thing for young people to negotiate. There is a need to help students develop their self-confidence and build resiliency so that they can negotiate this brave new world. They need to be thoughtful, careful and develop their written and oral communication skills.

From a young age, I was unable to stand for injustice. When I see something that is unfair, I speak up and volunteer to assist in any way that I can. In my blog I will be including my own writing from primary school which I discovered was prolific and passionate. Please find my piece of writing which was my 2nd entry to the Dade County Youth Fair. I entered this piece of writing the year after my short story ‘The Runaway Puppy’ received a 2nd place ribbon.
